Understanding Professional Tax
👔
State-Level Tax
Professional Tax is levied by state governments under Article 276 of the Constitution. It applies to salaried employees, professionals, traders, and self-employed persons. Maximum limit: ₹2,500/year.
💼
Employer Responsibility
Employers must deduct PT from employee salaries and deposit it to the state PT authority. Non-compliance attracts penalties. The amount deducted appears on your Form 16 and payslip.
🧾
Tax Deduction
PT paid is deductible under Section 16(iii) while computing income from salary. This reduces your taxable income. The deduction is available under both old and new tax regimes.
