❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I actually ask my employer to restructure salary? ▼
Yes! Many companies, especially IT firms, allow annual salary restructuring. Speak to HR with this analysis. Startups and mid-size companies are usually more flexible. The total CTC remains the same — only the breakup changes.
Does lower basic affect PF and gratuity? ▼
Yes, EPF (12% of basic) and gratuity are linked to basic pay. Lower basic means lower PF contribution but higher take-home. If you're young and can invest the difference in mutual funds (historically higher returns than PF), it may be worth it. If you value guaranteed retirement savings, keep basic higher.
Is employer NPS contribution really worth it? ▼
Absolutely. Employer NPS contribution up to 10% of basic (14% for govt) is deductible under Section 80CCD(2) — this is ABOVE the ₹1.5L limit of 80C. On a ₹6L basic, that's ₹60K extra deduction, saving ₹18K+ in tax at 30% slab.
Do these optimizations work with New Tax Regime? ▼
Only employer NPS (80CCD2) and standard deduction of ₹75,000 work in the new regime. HRA, LTA, food coupons, and most deductions are NOT available. This optimizer shows the benefit for both regimes — the old regime typically benefits more from restructuring.
What documents do I need for meal card / food coupons? ▼
No special documents required from your end. The employer issues a meal card (like Sodexo/Zeta) and the allowance (up to ₹2,200/month) is tax-free under Section 17(2). Just ensure it's part of your CTC restructuring agreement with HR.
