The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 replaced the 1986 Act and came into effect on 20 July 2020. Key upgrades include: establishment of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), provisions for e-commerce and product liability, class action suits, and mediation as an ADR mechanism. It also covers misleading advertisements and unfair contracts. The 3-tier consumer commission system (District â State â National) continues.

đ E-Commerce Consumer Rights
- â Return/Refund Policy: Must be clearly displayed before purchase. No unfair cancellation charges.
- â Grievance Officer: Every e-commerce entity must appoint a grievance officer. Complaint must be acknowledged in 48 hours, resolved in 1 month.
- â No dark patterns: CCPA Guidelines (Nov 2023) ban 13 types of dark patterns â false urgency, basket sneaking, confirm shaming, forced action, etc.
- â Country of Origin: Must be displayed for all imported goods. Domestic alternatives must be suggested.
- â Product Liability: Manufacturer, seller, AND e-commerce platform can all be held liable for defective products or deficient services.
